The name of “Hefei” first appeared in the Collected Biographies of Merchants under the Historical Records written by Sima Qian, a famous writer and historiographer in Chinese history. It goes like: Hefei, impacted economically from both north and south, was a collection and distribution center for furs, leather, aquatic products and timber. Between Qin and Han Dynasties, it was chartered as Hefei County, coming under the jurisdiction of Jiujiang Prefecture. Liu Xiu, an emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty, upgraded Hefei to be a Kingdom. By the Three Kingdoms Period, Hefei was the seat of the government of Yangzhou Prefecture. Hefei is located 130 km west of Nanjing, its annual average temperature is about 15.7 °C. Its annual precipitation is about 1000 mm. It snows irregularly in the winter. In the months of June, July, August, and often September, daily temperatures can reach highs of 37 °C with high humidity levels being the norm. May and June see the air quality level in Hefei diminish. The city is blanketed by a foul-smelling smog caused by the smoke generated as farmers outside the city burn their fields in preparation for planting the next crop. The three counties of Hefei are all situated in the watershed of Yangtze River and Huaihe River, featuring hilly and undulating topography. Being in the transition area between the subtropical and temperate zones, Hefei has distinct seasons with mild climate.The total land area of Hefei is 726,600 hectares, and 36.5% is arable land area accounting to 265 thousand hectares. Population in Hefei is 4,446,800. |
